We are hiring a full time, permanent Engineer, Downtown & DA Distribution position working out of Edmonton, AB.
This role is responsible for the design and estimation of overhead and underground electric distribution systems, as well as serving as a key liaison with customers. The position also includes accountability for interpreting and validating engineering designs, standards, and specifications to ensure compliance and quality.
What you’d be responsible for
• Authenticate engineering designs, including recommending broader modifications and new approaches to designs
• Lead electrical distribution design projects, procure materials, issue and approve work orders, and oversee field inspections and contractor performance during construction and maintenance
• Provide engineering expertise for electrical design and construction of distribution and secondary network systems, while developing technical specifications and standards for procurement and design requirements for Downtown and secondary network infrastructure
• Perform, review and authenticate calculations including pulling calculations, clearances due to sag and tension of aerial wires, pole strength calculations and transformer sizing
• Mentor and coach junior staff and designers; identify development and training needs
• Assess and promote best practices in engineering design, materials, and methods to position the team as an industry leader in safety and efficiency
• Perform stakeholder-level review of engineering designs with operations staff to ensure constructability and electrical system compatibility requirements
• Provide input to strategic directions, technological advancements and budget requirements for the provision of optimal engineering solutions
• Develop and manage engineering processes to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulatory requirements and risk mitigation
• Establish, monitor and report on engineering performance metrics. Identify areas for improvement and implement initiatives to enhance design quality and efficiency
What’s required to be successful
• Degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institute.
• With a Degree we require:
o Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
• With a Diploma we require:
o Professional Licensee (P.L. Eng.) with the ability to review, approve and stamp electrical distribution system designs
• Currently registered or eligible to be registered with APEGA
• 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in electrical distribution systems including design and construction methods, procedures, and work practices in aerial and underground distribution systems
• Familiarity with Alberta Electric Utility Code and CSA standards
• Proficient in engineering standards, material specifications, and design guidelines for utility systems
• Experience in the design and construction of on-site distribution engineering projects
• Experience in planning and executing new initiatives and implementing new processes
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Electric Office or other GIS systems, IVARA and/or other work management tools, such as MS Project
• Effective collaborator with strong relationship-building skills across teams and stakeholders
• Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, solve complex technical problems, and make sound decisions
