As the Pavement Engineer, you will assist with the City’s pavement design analysis, development of pavement rehabilitation strategies, review and update the road specifications to meet the changes in the industry standards, collaborate with industry and various interested parties to find environment friendly solutions, and various pavement engineering support services. Primary responsibilities include: Act as the custodian of road specifications, ensuring that all design and construction activities comply with relevant industry standards and regulations. Review road specifications and coordinate with various parties to update specifications as needed to reflect the latest advancements and requirements. Review and authenticate technical specifications, reports. Prepare briefing notes, design bulletins, and technical memos. Prepare requests for proposals and tenders, manage road rehabilitation projects, write reports and business cases. Align with industry advancements, new technologies, and best practices in pavement engineering. Work with industry and academia to explore innovative methods and materials and lead pilot projects in order to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 to meet the Council Climate goals and objectives. Provide technical guidance and recommendations to colleagues, contractors, and other parties. Understand Quality Control/Quality Assurance tests using non-destructive pavement testing methods (Ground Penetrating Radar, Falling Weight Deflectometer, International Roughness Index), and analyze results. Perform pavement designs and implement rehabilitation strategies to minimize the life cycle cost and extend the service life of pavements. Assist in evaluating pavement structure design for major capital and maintenance project. Coordinate and perform emergency inspections such as sinkholes, construction issues with the internal and/or external parties and make recommendations. Respond to Aldermanic and public complaints (311) promptly and professionally. Qualifications A degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada, and current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or licensure by the first day of work. At least 4 years of experience in pavement design and analysis, materials, specification reviews, research/innovative road projects, pavement rehabilitation programs, and tender preparation. Strong knowledge of industry standards regulations and guidelines related to road construction and pavement materials. Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality standards. Strong organizational and project management skills. Excellent communication, negotiation, analytical, and organizational skills with a focus on relationship building and multitasking to meet tight deadlines.
